Introduction:

The world renowned Kailashnath temple is situated in Ellora (Verul) Village which is also counted as Cave No. 16.

This huge temple, spread over twice the area of Parthenon of Greece, is carved from a single, huge piece of rock.

The construction style of this temple is unique wherein the shikhar (top) was built first followed by the lower parts.

Krishna-I of the Rashtrakoot dynasty built this Shiv temple in 760 A.D. and named it after Kailash Parvat, the abode of Shiv.

The original inscriptions suggest that this temple was dedicated to Indra. Situated close by is the Ghrishneshwar Jyotirling.
